Oaxaca and Patron Saint Festivities – with dates!

Dancers ready for Calenda, in Oaxaca City

In Mexico you can see a culture of adaptation and survival where 500 years after the Catholic religion was introduced by force, indigenous traditions are mixed with Spanish ones.  Today, every village has its patron saint.  In bigger cities, each neighborhood or church has its own saint, and each saint is celebrated with a special mass.  Fireworks, musical parades and festivities are held to honor the patron saint.

Calenda festivities in Oaxaca continue into the night

In Oaxaca, communities all across the state celebrate the Fiestas Patronales (patron saint festivities) from the novena (9 days before Mass on the main date below) to the octava (eight days after the Mass).  Depending on when you visit, you might experience a Calenda (musical procession with dancers following a brass band), cultural events, crafts fairs, or food booths (including tacos, local specialties, pastries and drinks).
