Self-guided walking route
One of the joys of getting to know a new city is to stumble across little tucked-away spots – a street, a corner, a little park. Of course you can get to know many such hidden treasures as a part of our private guided tours, but exploring on your own is also great! Here is one area you can walk around if you happen to be in the south. If you are travelling by MetroBus, you can get off at La Bombilla or at Dr. Galvez to explore the Chimalistac neighborhood. This was a village since prehispanic times, but in the late 18th century the orchards of the Carmelite college of San Angel was turned into a residential neighborhood. There are numerous stone bridges over what used to be the Magdalena river, and now it is a green and quiet walkway through the middle of Chimalistac.
Here you have a map, with Chimalistac marked in green. It’s basically the square created by 4 very large streets: Ave. Insurgentes, Av. Universidad, Miquel Angel de Quevedo and Copilco. You can see the strip of green crossing through the middle of this square, that’s the Paseo del Río shown in the photo above (photo taken from this Wiki site)

.

The little streets running from Insurgentes to Universidad are cobblestone and quiet, and the Parque de la Bombilla on the northwest corner is a popular place to hang out. The Bombilla metrobus station is by that park, and the Dr. Galvez station is on the bottom end of Av. Insurgentes on this map. Let us know if you take this walk! We’d love to know your reaction.
